When Modesty Meets Maternity: The Romper Debate

There’s a video circulating online right now of a pregnant woman in a romper ministering at church. In the clip, it’s clear — her stomach pokes out just as far and just as round as her backside.

And, of course, the internet is divided. Some women are defending her, saying it’s perfectly fine. Others are calling it unholy.

Here’s where I stand: I don’t think the outfit was appropriate for the setting + her body. But I do think pregnant women deserve a little wardrobe grace — even if the “malfunction” was intentional. It’s not a crime to be beautiful while bringing life into the world. As long as you’re covered, you’re covered.

So yes — maybe not appropriate, but grace is due.

We should view this as what it is: a wardrobe malfunction. Whether it was a fashion choice gone wrong or just one of those days when the mirror lied to us all, it’s not a spiritual crisis. The Bible tells us in Galatians 6:1, “If someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently.”

Gently. Not publicly. Not harshly.

If we can extend grace to someone who fell, we can extend grace to someone who simply dressed wrong. On the flip slide, if we cannot extending grace to someone who simply dressed wrong, how can we extend grace to someone who fell?

What I don’t agree with is calling her appearance unholy. Unholy isn’t a look; it’s a condition of the heart. And this? This isn’t that.

If you watch closely, she’s the only woman dressed that way in the entire video. That tells me this isn’t a church-wide issue or evidence of some “spirit” at work. It’s just one woman who dressed differently that day.

So let’s keep our perspective where it belongs — on restoration, not ridicule.

And with that, I rest my case.

You’re welcome. The judge has spoken.
